The Dumbing Down of High Tech
Previously I have discussed how the decline of education and training is going to bite into our high-tech civilization by crippling the building and maintenance of the technological wonders that support modern societies. A Telegraph article, “New generation of nuclear in doubt,” notes that, in addition to funding problems, the growing lack of technological expertise is going to keep the nuclear renaissance from happening. Underlying this problem is that the escalating cost of energy is forcing a cutback on education and training needed for fostering the engineers and skilled workers who underpin high-tech civilization. As their numbers dwindle, they will be monopolized by entities who are able to mobilize the energy needed to train and feed them. Eventually, that will leave the rest of us to make do with a more low-tech lifestyle. So start honing your survival skills now.
