What If We're in a Depression But Don't Know It?
As observed before, the current downturn isn't a recession or depression as we usually use the terms. Net energy decline is a heavy drag on economies, thereby in effect creating what appears to be a "Great Recession." Keep in mind that the world pulled out of the Great Depression because in those years the net energy yields of coal and oil were very high. High net energy was also the primary reason that the defeated nations of WWII were able to rebuild so rapidly — they successfully leveraged their reconstruction and recovery efforts with plenty of cheap, high-quality energy. Unfortunately, this time is different! Reconstruction efforts, such as in post-tsunami Japan, are painfully slow, showing that Japan now cannot get the energy leverage it had in the early postwar years. Net energy decline dictates that there is a long slide ahead of us before we are able to settle at a much lower energy level. In the process, we will be forced to give up most of the gains made during the 20th century. -- RF
